Driving the Future of CMF

The Car Design News & Ultrafabrics Colour, Material & Finish Survey has become a definitive annual snapshot of where automotive design stands, and where it’s headed. More than just a trend tracker, the 2025 edition brings together industry expertise, bold predictions, and a commitment to elevating the global car design community.

Ultrafabrics’ Senior Manager of Advanced Automotive Design, Kimberley Harrington, sat down with Car Design News Editor, James McLachlan, to unpack the standout findings and what they signal for the future of CMF in automotive design.

In their conversation, Kimberley and James unpack some of the most compelling themes from the 2025 CMF Survey:

Innovation Frontiers

Across established markets, sustainability is seen as the main driver of innovation. China stands apart, prioritizing integrated technology, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape. While Chinese OEMs lead in tech advancement, Western brands retain a stronghold in perceived quality and customer trust.

Generational Shifts

The survey reveals a clear generational divide, Boomers value comfort and tradition, while Millennials and Gen Z prioritize sustainability and smart materials. With younger consumers gaining spending power, brands are evolving. From Renault and Dacia’s leather-free interiors to more flexible material offerings, CMF strategies are diversifying.

Material Misconceptions + Color Trends

Harrington addresses the evolving role of PU materials, challenging outdated perceptions. She highlights their value in sustainable design and the latest R&D at Ultrafabrics, including biobased, recycled and renewable content.

The survey validates a shift toward earthy, warm tones, evoking familiarity, timelessness, and a premium feel. These palettes reinforce the emotional connection between users and interiors.
