The Color of Love is Blue

It’s hard to pin down an exact statistic, but if you Google “most popular color” you’ll invariably find the answer is: Blue.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise given how surrounded we are by the color.

The ocean and its reflection in the sky encompass so much of our visual space. It’s been said that “familiarity breeds affection” - its ubiquity in nature could be why so many are comforted by it and comfortable with it. Regardless of color trends, year-over-year Blue. Drives. Business. But how to cut away from the pack when blue is everywhere? New pigment chemistry is rare with only a handful of unique new pigments discovered every 10-15 years, but now there’s a brand-new blue to make us fall in love with it again: YinMn Blue.

YinMn Blue is the first new manmade blue pigment to be discovered in over 200 years. This vibrant blue hue was an accidental discovery by chemist Mas Subramanian at Oregon State University and is the result of mixing the elements Yttrium Oxide (Y2O3), Indium Oxide (In2O3) and Manganese Oxide (MnO2) … hence the name YinMn Blue.

In addition to its vivid color, the unique chemistry offers some surprising benefits. The brilliant shade is thermally stable, reflects heat and can absorb UV rays – attributes that will prove especially valuable for exterior applications by reducing cooling costs and energy consumption.

YinMn Blue resurrects our passion for blue and encourages us to reconsider the hue in terms of its benefits as well as its impact.
